The company was organized by Great Northern interests in 1896 to take over the foreclosed properties of the Duluth and Winnipeg Railroad Company. It operated the latter's 100 miles of rail line until 1899, when the properties were all conveyed to the Eastern Railway Company of Minnesota. The company was dissolved in 1928. The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam.
